Representation Reflection Discussion Post

The idea of representation compares to Stuart Hall's theory because Hall's theory explains how a subject does not have one fixed meaning. It is ''meaning'' does not exist in the real world until it is represented in media. And that media is what give these events or subjects meaning. Stuart Hall states '' Representation is not an after the event activity, it means something and then the presentation might change or distort. We are talking about the fact that it has no fixed meaning no real meaning in the obvious sense. Until it is being represented.'' This means that media is the meaning makers to these events that happenedFor example, using the corona virus pandemic, it has been alleged that it came from china and Chinese people. As a result, many people many people associated Chinese people with having the virus. Before that connection came out to the media those associations were not madeOn the other hand, the idea of representation is certain images, stories and situations represented by media. Representation is then broken into stereotypes and scripts. A stereotype is ways of imagining groupsidentities, and situations. For instance, common stereotypes are Mexicans come to America illegally or Arabs and Muslims are terrorists. This is how media display these groups of people. Scripts are shared expectations that are performed with hugely different degrees of commitment, by us the ‘actors’ it also involves important images of how life may be lived or how to behave with others in particular situations. Gender representation is a debate on a men and women's role in life. It is ''scripted'' that women cook and clean, and their body should look a certain way. That women should dress feminine, such wearing dresses and makeup. In contrast men should be the hard workers who are strong and be masculineThese are ways in which life should be lived. With this information being said, the idea of representation are stories and images told be media, in comparison Stuart Hall's theory is that events do not have a fixed meaning until it is being represented by media.
